Where to Pitch: Women & Girls
Given recent political events, coverage of women’s rights has seemed particularly relevant. International Day of the Girl Child took place on October 11, reminding us all of how real need for awareness of women’s and girls’ rights is globally.
Feminism has become increasingly mainstream, and most news outlets will accept pitches examining women’s issues in culture. However, there are a few exceptional publications that encourage work by women writers, on a variety of subjects.
The publications below cover a range of topics and each have their own individual style, and so we’ve provided their descriptions as on their sites, but encourage writers to familiarize themselves with the tone of each platform before pitching. (All pay writers for accepted contributions.)

We are not a “women’s magazine” and our writers aren’t writing exclusively for a female audience on “female” subjects (a notion we hope to tacitly challenge). The fact that all of Vela’s writers are women is almost, almost incidental: it would be completely incidental if the publishing world did not create a situation in which women’s voices represent only a fraction of the conversation. Our aim is to ensure that women writers are as recognized and read as their male counterparts.
We’re a multimedia company run and funded by women that’s predicated on a simple, yet radical notion: the world is a better, more interesting place when everyone has a voice. When one small, homogenous group runs the media, we’re left with a very skewed notion of the human experience. We’re here to provide space for writers and creators of all shapes, sizes, and creeds to work their magic. Let’s build a new Establishment.

Bitch Media is a nonprofit, independent, feminist media organization dedicated to providing and encouraging an engaged, thoughtful feminist response to mainstream media and popular culture. Bitch aims to put a lucid, balanced face on feminism for all kinds of folks, including people who aren’t really aware that feminism refers to more than women who don’t want to shave their legs, or simply getting more women into positions of power. Similarly, we encourage people to consider feminism as a necessary part of the broader social justice movement.
