Apply for funding for journalistic projects in Russia!
HackPack.press and the UGC platform Newsreps.com supported by the Swedish Institute announce a competition for Russian journalists to win project funding.
The competition is organized to help journalists without the means to conduct longer-term projects on specific topics. Winners will receive a grant, not exceeding 50,000 rubles to prepare their selected project. They will also have the opportunity to travel to Stockholm, Sweden to build their network with colleagues there.
Audience
HackPack.press andNewsreps.com invite participants to apply who are:
— Journalists from various mediums: TV, radio, print and online media
— Journalists with no less than 3 years of experience
— Full-time and freelance journliasts
— Journalists must be from the Russian Federation
— Journalists with English language skills of intermediate or advanced
Topics
HackPack.press and Newsreps.com will support applications focused on the following topics:
- The Russian electoral process
- Preparations to the 2018 World Futbol Championship
- LGTQ life and community
- Applications on other topics are also encouraged to apply.
Preference will always be given to applicant with background and specific experience covering the topics they apply with.
Format
The applicant selects which format is most appropriate for the story, including:
— Video or audio (length to be no lose than 10 minutes)
— A text report or feature (no less than 20,000 symbols)
— Multimedia story (length to be decided upon on a case by case basis)
Selection Process
Participants must send their application with a detailed description of the project by 12:00am on November 21. The applicants will be evaluated on:
- Correctly and fully filled out application with a detailed plan of the project
- Experience in working on the applied to
- Level of English skills
- Capability to publish and promote the project following its completion
Applicants are also expected to be skilled in planning long-term projects and time management. Applicants with background working in teams and possessing contacts in the press to ensure future publication are preferred.
Application
Applications should include 1) a description of the project’s goals and expected goals (why and how would this project interest with a specific audience), 2) timeline to complete the project, 3) estimated budget.

Also, be sure to attach a resume with links to your portfolio of selected works. If your profile on HackPack.press is already filled out with that information, simply include a link to your profile.
Finalists will also participate in a Skype interview to discuss the project and evaluate their level of English skills.
After that, the jury will select five winners to receive grants of no more than 50,000 rubles per project. Jury members consist of Russian and foreign journalists and media managers. The grant should be spent on preparing the projects: travel costs, rental of equipment, etc. Honorariums for completion of the work will be decided by the jury.
Winners shall be announced Dec. 1, 2016.
Project Period
Winners will have until mid-February 2017 to develop their projects. During this time, Russian and Swedish experts and journalists will assist in consulting them based upon experience in their specific topics. HackPack and Newsreps will also assist the winners in developing work relationships with journalists who also focus in the selected areas.
Journalists who have successfully completed their projects will be invited to Stockholm for a two day workshop with Swedish colleagues. The workshops will assist in identifying ways to continue their work and further publish it.
